Westover's unique APS Magnet program is designed to allow each child to expand his/her creative talents in the areas of Art, Dance, Drama, General and Instrumental Music, Physical Education, Problem Solving, and Technology.
Throughout the school year, students will rotate through the APS disciplines learning and exploring many, varied and unusual concepts within each subject area.
Each child is given an opportunity for deeper exploration in one APS discipline through an intensified Focus unit. During this time, students will gain greater skills and understanding in a specific area of one of the arts.
Parents are invited to a Culminating Activity, such as a performance and/or display, at the conclusion of each Focus course to see what their children have been learning and creating.
There are two grade-wide showcases annually at Westover, one performed by the fourth grade and one by the fifth. The showcases are built into the curriculum, and the students rehearse during their regular Arts period for eight weeks. Before the rehearsals begin, all the students within each grade level are divided into five different groups within the show: Art, Dance, Drama, Music, and Physical Education.
